MiNightVet Chester

MiNightVet Chester is a small animal out of hours veterinary emergency service, welcoming dogs, cats, birds, exotics, poultry and small mammals. We are based in Chester providing emergency overnight and weekend care to clients.

Our service is also available to clients from other practices who have arranged this. Please see the list below to find out if your veterinary practice can use our service.

The MiNightVet team provide a dedicated emergency service with full-time night staff who will be alert and effective even at unsociable hours. The qualified vets and nurses have a special interest, experience and training in all aspects of urgent critical care.

Samantha Van De Struys

Samantha has worked in small animal practice since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2009. She started off life as a vet in the Highlands of Scotland before following her roots back to the Wirral. Samantha is particularly interested in emergency and critical care and enjoys the variety and fast pace that comes with providing out of hours care at MiNightVet. Outside of work she spends most of her energy looking after her two young children and two Springer Spaniels. On the odd occasion that she has any energy left, Samantha enjoys running and hill walking.

Becky Cartwright

Becky joined the practice in October 2014. She grew up in Cheshire and returned after graduating from Edinburgh University in 2007. She is no stranger to Cranmore Vets where MiNightVet Chester is based, as her first work experience placement was at the Childer Thornton surgery. Becky has a particular interest in behavioural problems of dogs and cats. Becky adopted a very laid back cat called Brian and enjoys photography in her spare time. (Becky is currently on maternity leave).

Sophie graduated from Nottingham University in 2017 and since then has worked in two first opinion hospitals, both in SW London and Cheshire. Sophie has a passion for ECC and is currently undertaking a post-graduate certificate in this area. At home Sophie enjoys running and keeping fit, and has a place in the London Marathon 2022. Sophie also likes to travel when able and take walks around the local area. Sophie shares the house with 2 dogs (Nelson the one eyed rescue dog and Rom the Labrador) and Nelson the cat.

Emma qualified with a distinction from the University of Liverpool in 2015. She began working for ChesterGates as a student in 2013 where she worked as an out of hours receptionist and ever since then she has had a passion for emergency and critical care. Emma is a committee member for the BSAVA and arranges clinical talks for vets and veterinary nurses locally. As well as emergency work she has a keen interest in exotic species and surgery. Outside work Emma cares for her young daughter and likes to keep fit. She has a doting cat Jessie and 16 rescue hens (we won’t name them all!).

Rebecca graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 2017 from the University of Liverpool. As a veterinary student in her last two years she worked at MiNightVet as a receptionist, gaining skills in the out of hours team. Having been particularly interested in Emergency and Critical Care right from the beginning of her career, she is now studying for a post graduate certificate in this discipline. In her spare time she enjoys walking her Corgi, Jasper, and competing with her horse named Ruby in dressage.

Racquel Spencer-Palm

Racquel is originally from Surrey and qualified from the Roya; Veterinary College before completing an internship at Chester Gates Referral Hospital. Racquel enjoys the fast pace and challenge of emergency medicine and has a strong interest in diagnostic imaging. Racquel has recently completed a postgraduate certificate in diagnostic imaging and is now undertaking another certificate in Emergency and Critical Care.

In her spare time Racquel enjoys baking which is great news for the team! She also enjoys exploring with her two dogs, Dusty and Rozsa.

Zoe qualified from Bristol university in 2018 having previously completed a Bsc(Hons) in Zoology. Zoe has worked in small animal practice since qualifying and has a passion for Emergency and Critical Care work and undertaking a post graduate certificate in this area. Zoe is proud to be born and raised in North Wales where she currently lives with her two cocker spaniels, a Ragdoll and Moggy Cat.

She enjoys the fast paced challenging environment of emergency work and the varied cases that walk through the door. Laura has a particular interest in wound care. Away from work she enjoys spending time at home with her partner and her three crazy Chihuahuas named Ivy, Bernard and Theo.

Kim qualified as a registered veterinary nurse in January 2017 and to progress her role in the veterinary world she joined MiNightVet in February 2018. Kim is particularly dedicated to theatre practice and impatient care and in the future is looking forward to progressing her knowledge and studying emergency and critical care in more depth. Kim has always been passionate about animals and has five family dogs and two mischievous cats. Outside of work Kim likes to spend time with family and friends as well as keeping busy caring for her four-legged friends.

Gemma initially started working for ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists as a kennel assistant in 2009, before becoming a registered veterinary nurse in 2013. Shortly after this she moved to the MiNightVet team. Gemma has a keen interest in intensive care nursing and exotic animals. In her spare time she looks after her own pets which include two snakes, three bearded dragons and three cats called Loki, Timmy and Caspian. Gemma also takes Caspian as a volunteer to Pets as Therapy.

Kate joined MiNightVet Chester in May of 2019. Having been qualified for 17 years, and a Head Nurse in a local first opinion practice for 15 years, Kate made the hard decision to leave and venture down a new nursing path. It soon turned out to be the best decision she’d ever made. Kate enjoys the varied aspect that emergency and critical care brings, with no two shifts being the same. She enjoys nursing each and every case, as hard as they may be. She always enjoyed surgery and anaesthesia, but has found a true passion for ECC. Her home life mainly revolves around her little cat Janet, spending time with friends and family and supporting Liverpool Football Club.
